Laptops are self contained complex devices in a very small package. You might think twice before attempting to repair it. They are very delicate and it would be easy to damage, resulting in a much more expensive repair. Unless it is a very old laptop with little value and it has a simple, very easy to repair problem I suggest you find a reputable laptop service repair shop to repair it for you.

Just leave it alone. Don't make it worse. You'll never paint it right and how will you prevent the paint from getting inside? Forget it.

I would suggest getting an external drive bay and pulling the hard drive from the notebook (generally a couple of screws on the bottom) and putting it into the External box and then plugging it into either the firewire or USB port on your 2nd computer. Make sure to get the right connection for your notebook/hard drive. IDE vs Sata. Take the drive to your local computer store and they can help you get the right parts.
